"The essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple."
-- S. Gudder
Mrs. Rayman's 6th Grade Math
Sixth grade mathematics will provide students with an investigative approach to learning and opportunities to utilize interactive problem solving along with motivating everyday situations to learn mathematical concepts. Students will also focus on applying technological tools to assist in alternate representations and connections to mathematical concepts. There are five strands of mathematical study which include eleven subcategories that will enable the students to:
Ratios and Proportional Relationships:
The Number System:
Expressions and Equations:
Geometry:
Statistics and Probability:
Ratios and Proportional Relationships:
- Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.
The Number System:
- Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions.
- Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.
- Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.
Expressions and Equations:
- Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.
- Reason about and solve one variable equations and inequalities.
- Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.
Geometry:
- Solve real world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
Statistics and Probability:
- Develop understanding of statistical variability.
- Summarize and describe distributions.

6th Grade Math Homework:
Completing math homework is essential to success in math. Expect homework in math every week as a practice or for exploration of new concepts. Homework is not a punishment, but a valuable tool to help your student succeed in math.
